Overhead Forged Racks for Extreme Storage: Doubling Garage Space Without Building an Addition

The garage was supposed to hold the cars. Instead it holds the camping gear, the Christmas decorations, four bikes, the patio furniture that lives inside seven months a year, and a stack of totes nobody has opened since the move.

Building an addition is one answer. Looking up is a much cheaper one. In most Okanagan garages there is a substantial volume of completely unused space between the top of the walls and the ceiling, and that is where the storage problem gets solved.

The space you are already paying for

A standard double garage has something in the order of 400 square feet of ceiling area. Unless something is hanging from it, none of that is doing anything.

Overhead racks convert it into usable storage. Each unit provides up to 128 cubic feet, and because the items that eat the most floor space are typically bulky and seasonal rather than heavy, they are exactly the things that belong up there. Move four or five of those categories overhead and the floor comes back.

What the racks are and what they hold

Our forged overhead racks are built from industrial grade steel and finished in a white powder coat. Each rack holds up to 600 pounds, comes in four sizes, and can be set at an adjustable height between 21 and 45 inches from the ceiling. Openings run up to eight feet wide, so long items go up without being wrestled into position.

The 600 pound figure matters more than it sounds. Many consumer racks sold at big box stores are rated well below that, and the difference shows up the first time someone loads a rack with tool cases or a set of winter tires.

What belongs overhead, and what does not

The best candidates for overhead storage share a pattern: bulky, used seasonally, and not needed in a hurry.

• Camping and outdoor gear, including tents, coolers and sleeping bags
• Holiday decorations and seasonal display items
• Patio cushions and furniture covers through the winter
• Suitcases and travel cases
• Off-season sports equipment, from ski bags to water toys
• Children’s items you are keeping but not currently using
• Spare building materials and offcuts from past projects

What should stay at reachable height is anything used weekly, anything genuinely heavy for its size, and anything sensitive to heat. Garage ceilings are the warmest part of the space in an Okanagan July, which matters for paint, adhesives and some electronics.

Installation is structural work, not a weekend project

This is the part where do-it-yourself installations go wrong. An overhead rack transfers its entire load into the ceiling framing, which means every mounting point has to land in solid structure rather than in drywall or a guess.

Professional installation means locating and connecting to the joists properly, confirming the framing can take the load, setting the drop height so vehicles and garage doors clear it, and positioning racks where they do not conflict with door tracks, openers or lighting. A rack that is an inch too low becomes a permanent hazard to the roof of an SUV.

Where racks fit alongside other storage

Overhead racks solve bulk storage. They do not solve everything, and the best garages layer a few systems together. Slat wall aluminum hanger systems handle bikes, tools, garden equipment and skis on the vertical surfaces, keeping them visible and reachable. Cabinets handle the smaller items that would otherwise live in open bins. Our garage organization work usually combines all three, because each one is good at something the others are not.

Planning the layout before anything gets mounted

A free consultation is worth doing before you buy anything, because the sequence matters. Racks should be positioned around vehicle parking positions and door swing rather than simply filling the ceiling. Drop height needs to account for the tallest vehicle you expect to park there, not the one you own today. And if cabinets or slat wall are going in as well, the layout works better when all of it is planned at once.
